In marketing, the reason we create content is to connect with our desired audience. One of the biggest mistakes that many people make is to create content that is far too formal, or too business-like. Here is why you should avoid the formality, and just be yourself!
The world is a very different place than it was 20 years ago. For many of us, myself included, grew up in a world where being online wasn’t mainstream like it is today. We may have had jobs where we had to dress formally or communicate in a business-like manner. There was a clear distinction between work and personal life.
Communicating and presenting ourselves online is a whole different matter, yet when we haven’t been taught how to do it, it’s no wonder that so many of us feel stuck or overwhelmed.
The Power of Authenticity
For female solopreneurs, who are running businesses online, it’s really important to realise that we can just be ourselves. We don’t need to show up in a particular way or put on a persona.
By being ourselves, the content we produce shows our values, vision, passion and joy, and all the things that make us unique. When we create from the heart, it speaks to the heart of others. We make authentic connections.
In these modern, digital times, repeating those old corporate messages, or old-fashioned ways of presenting ourselves to the world is not going to work. Your message is competing with millions of others, and authenticity is the only way to make fast, deep connections with your dream clients.
What I Teach my Clients
I teach my clients to really think about the deeper layers behind why their business exists. By gaining perspective and clarity, it helps them to create marketing that’s meaningful. Not only meaningful to their desired clients, which obviously we’re trying to attract, but meaningful to them as well, so they feel excited to create it and embrace the activity of doing it.
If you’re struggling at the moment, have a look at the type of content that you’re creating. Are you just broadcasting to the world? Are you just selling your services? Are you just regurgitating your website? Or are you creating posts that connect with your desired dream clients, that speaks to them in a way that resonates with them that gives them those ‘aha’ moments? Are you giving them insights into the type of person you are, the values you hold dear, why you are passionate about what you do and why you do it?
When we feel aligned with the deeper reasons behind why we do what we do, we are far more likely to embrace our marketing, and communicate with the world, rather than spending hours procrastinating over posts, wondering what to say and painfully picking over content thinking, ‘Is this okay?’
This rollercoaster of content marketing can keep us in the feast and famine cycle in our businesses, and it can lead to burnout as well. When you’re not being your authentic self in your brand, you’re almost putting on a mask and hiding behind it, after a while, it will wear you down. Trust me, I’ve been there and it’s no fun.
Once we start looking at all of these things, that’s when you can really start to create content that not only speaks to your desired clients, but it really reflects you as well. You will be really proud of it, want to do it and share it with the world. It makes everything so much easier, I promise!
